Food Adventure 1: Ggultare

Hi everyone, welcome to the first official food post! Yay! This is Liz here, and I thought for the first post I'd start with something that everyone could enjoy without fear, rather than going for the bad, weird or ugly.

So today I'd like to introduce a popular, Korean traditional snack called ggultare (꿀타래).

Ggultare is made of a honey and malt wrapping, which is, for lack of a better word, wrapped around a selection of flavours, such as: peanuts, walnuts, almonds, and chocolate. Now, I know it's sounding very sickly sweet: chocolate wrapped in honey and malt, I myself can feel the cavities growing by just looking at the pictures. But the honey and malt is actually worked over and over so it creates 16,000 strands (thus the almost furry appearance), which don't taste as sickly sweet as the ingredients suggest.

However, if this isn't sounding particularly appealing, I still recommend visiting a ggultare store because they're just so fun. The employers (who are all very friendly) actually make the ggultare before your very eyes, explaining every step in a catchy jingle. And never fear if you're not a Korean speaker, because this comes in English, Chinese and Japanese as well!

Unfortunately, the only downside is that ggultare can only be found in Korea. But, if you do happen to find yourself there, ggultare stores are easy to find and they're a cheap purchase as well, so be sure to stop by, even if it is to just watch.

So here ends the first food adventure. I hope everyone enjoyed, and there are definitely lots more to come, so until then happy eating. Liz.
